Amb. D’Antuono, deep Italy-Georgia ties

(ANSA) – ROMA, 04 GIU – “The ties between Italy and Georgia are deep. This is witnessed by the strong contribution, amounting to around USD 600 million in 2024, i.e. just under 2% of Georgian GDP, provided by the Georgian community in Italy for the benefit of their country’. This was emphasised by the Italian Ambassador in Tbilisi, Massimiliano D’Antuono, opening the ceremony for the Italian Republic Day.
In the presence of numerous representatives of Georgian society, the diplomatic corps and the Italian community in the country, the ambassador recalled the cooperation of the two countries in the field of culture and education, as witnessed by the launch of the Faculties of Medicine and Design at the International University of Kutaisi together with the University of Naples ‘Federico II’. From a commercial point of view, “in 2024 Italy was confirmed as Georgia’s 2nd trading partner at the European level and 11th globally,” the ambassador added. “At the political level, Italy and Georgia are united by a long-standing friendship, which remains stable even in the current global and regional context, marked by numerous sources of instability and tension,” D’Antuono further said. “In this framework, as friends, we continue to strongly support the need to maintain a frank and constructive dialogue with Georgia, both bilaterally and within the European Union and NATO, and we hope that Georgia will soon give a new impetus to its European path, in adherence to the fundamental values and principles of the European Union,” he concluded. The evening continued with national anthems sung by the women’s folk ensemble ‘Gumbati’; music performed by two famous Italian accordionists, Sara Calvanelli and Simone Zanchini; a showcase of Italian design objects, from pieces of furniture to Alfa Romeo cars, the Italian pride of the automotive industry, to finish with Italian food and wine excellence.
