(ANSA) – GINEVRA, 19 SET – A declaration on the cultural rights of persons with disabilities presented today by Italy to the United Nations, together with Cyprus, Iraq, and Mexico, reached an absolute record for number of adhesions, as recognized by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
“An extraordinary achievement within the Human Rights Council, uniting the Global South and North in favor of human rights, at a historical moment marked by wars and humanitarian emergencies,” reads a statement from the Permanent Representation of Italy to the United Nations in Geneva. From the Americas to the Asia-Pacific, from Europe to Africa, some 150 countries have joined the Italian initiative, including all the Member States of the European Union, the African Group, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic States, the statement specifies.
In reaffirming the right of people with disabilities to participate in cultural life and to maintain their cultural and linguistic identity, Italy, together with all signatories, is committed to developing solutions that ensure universal access to cultural life, including through accessible digitization of cultural heritage.
“Strengthening legal frameworks, harmonizing policies and integrating cultural rights into education systems are essential steps, also in line with the universal commitment to leave no one behind, including people with intellectual disabilities and people with psychosocial disabilities,” said Italy’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Vincenzo Grassi.
The cultural rights of persons with intellectual disabilities are at the heart of the collaboration launched by Italy with the Heritage International Institute, which will develop the first international guidelines dedicated to them, promoted by the United Nations, the statement recalls. The initiative follows a specific event organized last June by Italy, Cyprus, Iraq, and Mexico, and is a defining moment in Italy’s candidacy for the Human Rights Council for the 2026-2028 term.
