(ANSA) – ROME, SEP 11 – Italy is ready to consider the sanctions on Israel proposed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in her state of the union speech, Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Thursday.
“We are ready to evaluate the additional new sanction proposals announced by Commission President von der Leyen in her speech in Strasbourg yesterday as soon as they are presented in the Council,” Tajani told the Senate.
“‘At the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Copenhagen last week, along with Germany we proposed imposing tough new sanctions on violent (Israeli) settlers. “We are willing to tighten restrictive measures against those who assault Palestinian villages, going so far as to hit Christian communities.
“What is happening in the Strip is increasingly unacceptable,” he continued.
“It continues to represent an open wound for the entire international community.
“We have reiterated this in all forums and I want to reiterate it here in this Chamber: we are firmly opposed to the Israeli plan to occupy Gaza City and to any idea of ;;forcibly transferring Palestinians from the Strip.” The minister added, however, that Rome was not ready to recognize the stare of Palestine.
“Without flag-waving, let’s work concretely, operationally, for the birth of a true Palestinian state, thus creating the conditions for the two-state solution,” he said.
“I want to reiterate this clearly. Recognizing a state without first creating the conditions for its birth would not produce any effect, except to push peace away. “I want to reiterate here strongly that Italy is in favour of the birth of a state that will allow the people of Palestine to realize their dream: to live safely in their own home.” (ANSA).
