(ANSA) – LOS ANGELES, 02 GIU – Hollywood’s most famous comedian and TV host, Jimmy Kimmel, presented the Italian Republic Day in Los Angeles. “Today marks its 79th anniversary and I am proud to have become a part of it. I have just obtained citizenship, thanks to my beloved grandmother Edith, whose family came from Candida, in the province of Avellino,” he said from the stage set up in the garden of a villa in the hills of Beverly Hills. “She used to repeat to me, ‘You have the brain of a hamster!'” he added amid laughter from the 500 or so guests.
“My grandfather’s parents came to New York from Ischia after an earthquake devastated Casa Micciola, in 1883, killing most of the family,” continued Kimmel, for 23 years at the helm of a late-show on Abc and four-time Oscar night host, “Now we all live in a city that is constantly at risk of earthquakes. One thing is certain: in our family we do not learn from the past’.
“Thank you Jimmy,” said Consul General Raffaella Valentini, “or should we call you Giovanni? Tonight we celebrate a nation that, for many of us, is more than a place on the map. Italy is a legacy, a melody. Here in California, especially in Los Angeles, a city of creativity and dreams, this bond takes living, concrete form. We see it in the arts, in business, in the technology sector, and yes, even in evening television programmes. Italians are not content to stand silently in the background’.
The evening was organised by the Consulate, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute, the Ice Agency, the Italy-America Chamber of Commerce West, and the National Tourism Agency (Enit). The Honourable Christian Di Sanzo, MP elected in the North and Central American College, also spoke. A fashion show by Italian brand Genny and catering by Eataly concluded the evening.
