Matlock Season 2 Has Officially Lost the Plot

Matlock was last year’s breakout hit.

It had Kathy Bates in full command as a charmingly dangerous lawyer-matriarch, dismantling a corrupt firm, and captured everyone’s attention.

It was bold, addictive, and emotionally sharp. For the first time in a long time, a TV show delivered the perfect pilot and didn’t let up until the Matlock Season 1 finale. Amazing, right? Well…

What Happened?

Matlock Season 2 is here, and I’m all caught up. Now, I have to ask: what happened to this show?

In all honesty, I expected something to go south sooner or later. I have watched with curiosity over how the writers will keep everything interesting. I just didn’t expect everything to become convoluted so soon.

The vast majority of shows — if not all of them — have an expiration date attached to them. Sometimes the main characters change, and the premise no longer works quite as it used to. At other times, the story naturally concludes.

However, smart writers know how to deliver twists and turns that renew the show or extrapolate the premise and escape the show’s natural end.

I expected that to happen with Matlock because one person can hide inside a high-security law firm for so long. Some people thought the premise was far-fetched; I felt it was severely limited by time.

When they delivered everything in the season finale, I thought, ‘Wow, this is going to last a long time.’

From Legal Thriller to Narrative Mess

I’ve now binged four episodes that have aired thus far, and I can’t tell you what’s going on.

For some reason, Matty and Olympia are working together, yet not in a collaborative manner.

They know who hid the documents and why, but for some reason, they’re tracking down some women from fifteen years ago when Senior went on vacation.

And what’s with everyone suddenly changing and becoming so unlikable? Senior has never been menacing; he’s actually always been sweet, so this attempt to paint him as a scary villain is not working.

Matlock worked because it featured a clear end goal, and the goal post has been shifted so far that no one can see where it is.

If I sound confused in my writing, it’s because that’s how the show has made me feel.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, what is going on? What are we working towards? Is it for Olympia to exonerate her ex-husband or for Matty to expose Senior?

Meanwhile, the show has introduced side plots, one of them being Alfie’s father, and I genuinely do not care.

He could be a ghost, a junkie, or a time traveler, and I still wouldn’t care. How does that fit into the larger story being told here?

This, coupled with some B-storylines about Billy and Sarah, has detracted from the show’s charm. These people are not exciting because they lack multifacetedness.

They exist only at the firm, so I don’t care about their pregnant girlfriends or quirky stepfathers.

The reason Matlock worked was that the weekly cases mirrored what Matty was going through emotionally. It was easy to understand and sympathize with her plight, but now that everything is chaos, the cases feel like more noise in an already noisy story.

The problem isn’t just that Matlock lost its way. It’s that it forgot what made it compelling: emotional clarity, character consistency, and a tightly wound premise.

Matlock Is Never Getting a Favorable Verdict After This Season

The problem developing with Matlock is not something we haven’t seen before. It’s not a sophomore slump; it’s something entirely different. I’m not sure if there’s a name for it yet.

This is a situation where producers pitch a story, get approved, have a hit show, and then get stuck.

They had great opening arguments, but the cross-examination exposed every flaw. The jury’s worst nightmare is coming true: being stuck in a trial that no longer makes sense.

It’s happened with Lost and The Blacklist. We’ve seen it with FROM and Game of Thrones. And we’ve witnessed it with Dexter and many more shows.

Matlock would have worked best as a limited series for Paramount+ or an anthology series.

In an attempt to manufacture longevity, the show is poised to become worse. Can they save it? I’m not sure.

The case is closed. By Matlock Season 2 Episode 2, the series lost its way, and no amount of legal maneuvering can revive it.
