Park Ranger Stabbed at Staunton State Park in Colorado
A seasonal Colorado Parks and Wildlife ranger remains hospitalized after being stabbed by an unknown attacker at Staunton State Park on Tuesday morning, but the park has reopened to visitors after authorities suspended their search and determined there is no ongoing public threat.
The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. when the ranger encountered the suspect during routine patrols near Staunton Rocks trail. After initial radio contact with Jefferson County emergency dispatch reporting an altercation, communications went silent for an extended period before the ranger was able to call back and report he had been stabbed.
“We had radio silence for quite a while, which is difficult when you can’t get in touch with somebody who is actually calling for help,” said Jacki Kelley, public information officer for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
The ranger sustained serious stab wounds to his torso and was airlifted to a local hospital after being transported to an Elk fire station. Following surgery, he is reported to be in stable condition and doing “pretty well,” according to authorities.

The attack prompted an immediate response from multiple agencies, including Colorado State Patrol, Golden Police Department, Arvada Police Department, Lakeside Police Department, regional SWAT teams, and drone units conducting both ground and aerial searches for eight hours before the operation was suspended Tuesday evening.
Authorities describe the suspect as a white male in his early 30s with brown hair and no facial hair, standing 6 feet tall and weighing approximately 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing a gray shirt without printing and blue jeans before fleeing into the wooded area surrounding the park.
Officials issued emergency alerts to 8,600 nearby homes and implemented lockdowns for schools and residents in the area during the search. The shelter-in-place order was lifted at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday.
Staunton State Park, located about 40 miles southwest of Denver, was completely evacuated and closed Tuesday but reopened to visitors Wednesday morning. The 4,000-acre park features 37 miles of trails, 25 campsites, and diverse landscapes ranging from grassy meadows at 8,100 feet to granite cliffs exceeding 10,000 feet.

Jefferson County investigators believe this was a targeted incident rather than a random attack. In a Wednesday Facebook post, the sheriff’s office stated: “Based on everything we know at this time, this was a targeted incident. We are confident there is no ongoing threat to the public.”
The victim was identified as a seasonal ranger who, unlike full-time officers, was unarmed and not wearing protective gear. Seasonal rangers can issue citations for park violations but cannot make arrests.
The suspect is wanted for attempted murder charges, but no arrests have been made as of Wednesday morning. The investigation continues despite the suspended search.
