(ANSA) – QUITO, 05 GIU – On the occasion of the 79th Republic Day celebrations, the Italian Ambassador in Quito, Giovanni Davoli, organised the traditional reception in the Residenza d’Italia, which was attended by over 500 people.
Guest of honour was Ecuador’s Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld. Also present were the Ministers of Defence, Interior, Tourism and Environment and numerous members of President Daniel Noboa’s government, as well as the governors of several provinces and numerous mayors.
There was a large audience of compatriots and representatives of Italian companies in Ecuador, as well as the local business and cultural world.
In his speech, Ambassador Giovanni Davoli emphasised the increasing closeness between the two countries: Italy is now the leading exporter to Ecuador among European nations, while the EU is the South American state’s leading trading partner.
Furthermore, Italy is the third country of destination for regular Ecuadorian emigration and the ties between the two nations have been consolidated thanks to the presence of a large Ecuadorian community in Italy, which is well integrated and makes its contribution to society and the economy. But it is also thanks to the Italian community that has taken root in Ecuador over the last century and has achieved important positions in local society, as is the case for example with President Noboa and his wife, both descendants of Italians.
Minister Sommerfeld thanked Italy and the embassy in Quito for their closeness to Ecuador at this difficult juncture in its history, as it is characterised by the violence unleashed by transnational organised crime, emphasising in particular the effectiveness of Italy’s legal diplomacy programmes and their importance in the strategy to combat mafias.
