(ANSA) – SANTO DOMINGO, 27 MAG – At the Pontificia Universidad Católica, Madre y Maestra of Santo Domingo, the PUCMM University, a public meeting was held focusing on the growing strategic relationship between the European Union and the Dominican Republic. The discussion, which reviewed the different areas of collaboration between Europe, both as the European Union and as Member States, and the Dominican Republic, took place in the presence of the Vice President of the Dominican Republic, Raquel Peña, and the Vice-Rector of the PUCMM University, Virginia Flores.
The conference began with a general introduction by the Ambassador of the European Union, Katja Afheldt, who presented some of the projects implemented by the European Union in the Dominican Republic with the aim of highlighting the strength of the relations and ties between the two actors.
The event was then articulated with more specific interventions by the Ambassador of Italy, Stefano Queirolo Palmas, the Ambassador of France, Sonia Barbry, the Ambassador of Germany, Maike Friedrichsen, the Ambassador of the Netherlands, Frank Keurhorst, and the Ambassador of Spain, Antonio Pérez Hernández.
The Ambassadors of the European countries present in Santo Domingo provided an overview of Euro-Dominican cooperation, with thematic discussions on the rule of law, security and defence, economic agreements, sustainable energy, investment, the protection of cultural heritage, academic cooperation and the strengthening of human capital.
Ambassador Queirolo Palmas’ speech placed particular emphasis on the deepening of defence cooperation and collaborative efforts from the security point of view: indeed, the Italian and European contribution in terms of equipping the armed forces and police, thanks to state-of-the-art equipment such as the Leonardo AW169 helicopters, is significant.
In addition, the artistic heritage was the subject of discussion, starting with the now completed work of the restoration firm Donadello & Partners, for the renovation of the facades of numerous prestigious buildings in the Zona Colonial in Santo Domingo and the academic and technical training initiatives associated with them.
Finally, in the final question-and-answer session, the Ambassador mentioned the ‘Amerigo’ project on agritourism, in collaboration with the Dominican Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Agriculture, the purpose of which is to encourage the transfer of the Italian model, to provide agricultural producers with income support and international visitors with experiences not limited to the beaches.
