1 in 4 Brits say this is ruining their Sunday roast

New research suggests one in four Brits are struggling to serve up Sunday dinner because of blunt kitchen knives.

Blunt blades can make carving, chopping and filleting harder, messier and potentially unsafe, with 23 per cent of people admitting they have injured themselves while using a less-than-sharp knife.

The survey of 2,000 adults found that 24 per cent of UK households sit down to a Sunday roast every week, but many are being let down by knives that are past their best.

Swedish knife sharpening specialist Tormek carried out the study as part of its Sharpen Up Your Sunday campaign, which also revealed that 29 per cent of people have never sharpened their knives.

Tormek CEO Samuel Stenhem said: “With Sharpen Up Your Sunday, we’re encouraging home cooks to make knife sharpening part of their weekly routine.”

He added: “Blunt knives can be more dangerous than sharp ones, as they require greater force and are more likely to slip, turning simple kitchen tasks into a potential recipe for injury. Instead, a truly sharp knife makes chopping, slicing and cooking an absolute joy.”

Chef, author and baking expert Richard Bertinet said: “At the Bertinet Kitchen Cookery School, we use knives every day, so we know just how important it is to keep them sharp.”

He added: “Whether you’re learning the basics or working at a professional level, every chef will tell you that a sharp knife gives you greater control and helps you get the most out of your cooking. If you’ve invested in good knives, it makes sense to keep them sharp.”

Learn to keep your knives as sharp as possible for precision and safety with our ’how to sharpen knives' guide.

Next, check out our tried-and-tested picks of the best knife sets and the best knife sharpeners.
