(ANSA) – ROME, SEP 24 – Firefighters on Wednesday found the body of a female German tourist who was swept away by flash floods on the night between Sunday and Monday while camping in Spigno Monferrato, in the province of Alessandra.
The woman’s body was found some four kilometres from the valley of the campsite she was staying at, sources said.
Italy has been hit by a wave of torrential rain and storms that have caused flooding and landslides in many areas this week.
A huge downpour turned streets on the Gulf of Naples island of Ischia into rivers on Tuesday, with roads made impassable and cars submerged in water.
There was more flooding in Como and other towns next to Lake Como on Wednesday following heavy rain overnight after the area was battered by the extreme weather at the start of the week.
Veneto has declared a regional state of emergency due to the fallout of the storms and Liguria said it will send a request to the central government for a state of emergency for its Val Fontanabuona area due to the damage caused.
Scientists say the climate crisis caused by human greenhouse gas emissions is making extreme weather events such as heatwaves, droughts, supercharged storms and flooding more frequent and more intense.
Although there are many sources of the greenhouse gases that are causing global heating, the main driver is the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal, sales of which generate huge profits for the world’s energy giants. (ANSA).
