Disrespectful attacks on separation of powers says ANM

(ANSA) – ROME, MAR 7 – Magistrates union ANM on Friday blasted as “disrespectful” government attacks on a high court ruling ordering the executive to compensate migrants stopped from landing from a coastguard ship as part of a closed ports policy in 2018.
“Once again the distance between the recognition of principles and their application is inexplicable,” said the national association of magistrates.
“Now even the decisions of the United Sections of the Court of Cassation are the object of unjustified attacks, without any respect for the separation of powers.
“Every time a decision is unwelcome, it is linked to an ideological evaluation.
The Board of the ANM cannot but reiterate once again that the separation of powers is a foundation of legal civilization, and expresses solidarity with colleagues of the Supreme Court”.
A group of mostly Eritrean migrants were prevented from disembarking from the Diciotti ship in the summer of 2018, for about 20 days, as part of then hardline anti-migrant interior minister Matteo salvini’s closed ports policy. (ANSA).
