Europe’s aviation sector is calling on European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to adopt a comprehensive Aviation Strategy that aligns with Europe’s economic priorities and global competitiveness.
The appeal comes as industry leaders update their Destination 2050 – A Route to Net Zero European Aviation roadmap, outlining an actionable plan to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Industry-Led Decarbonisation Plan Requires Policy Backing
The updated roadmap emphasizes that achieving net zero aviation will require:
Advanced aircraft & engine technologies
Widespread adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
Optimised air traffic management & aircraft operations
Economic & regulatory support for innovation
The report highlights that SAF and aircraft technology advancements will account for 83% of aviation emissions reductions by 2050.
Urgent Call for EU Policy Support
To accelerate aviation’s transition to sustainable air travel, the sector urges the European Commission to take immediate action:
Implement an EU industrial strategy for SAF to scale production and reduce costs
Align the Clean Industrial Deal & Sustainable Transport Investment Plan (STIP) with aviation’s strategic role
Boost research & innovation in fuel efficiency through Clean Aviation and SESAR (Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research)
Industry Leaders Call for Decisive Action in 2025
The Chairs of Airlines for Europe (A4E), ACI EUROPE, ASD, CANSO Europe, and ERA jointly stated:
“The new Destination 2050 report confirms that Europe’s aviation industry has a clear, actionable path to net zero emissions by 2050.
However, immediate action is crucial. The European Commission must deliver an Aviation Strategy this year that prioritizes decarbonisation, competitiveness, and regulatory efficiency.
Aviation must be central to the Clean Industrial Deal and STIP, ensuring a robust, sustainable, and globally competitive European aviation industry.”
Next Steps & Official Resources
The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE) is expected to review the industry’s recommendations.
