Laura Collett and London 52 held their nerve in the concluding jumping phase to secure a first ever individual gold medal at the FEI Eventing European Championships on Sunday.
The combination led after the cross-country section and produced a clear round, with just a minimal time penalty, to hold off Germany’s Michael Jung with a combined score of 27. Multiple gold medallist Jung also went clear to finish on 28.3, with another Briton, Tom McEwen, retaining the third place he held after the cross-country.
Jung had the consolation of leading Germany to a convincing win in the team competition – a task made easier on Saturday when two British riders were eliminated, ensuring the defending champions would not be on the European podium for the first time since 2013.
Ireland claimed the silver medal, their first podium position since 1993, while France took bronze just as they did on home soil two years ago.
